New Asphalt Driveways Built for Bastrop County Soil

A driveway is only as good as what is underneath it. Around Bastrop, that can mean deep, loose sand under the Lost Pines, heavier clay toward Elgin and Paige, or a mix of both on the same lot. Most of the failed driveways we replace were paved too thin over ground that was never compacted, then cracked at the edges and sank in the wheel paths within a few summers.

We build every driveway from the ground up: correct the grade, compact the subgrade, install a crushed limestone base sized for your soil and vehicles, then pave with hot-mix asphalt rolled to full density. The result is a drive that sheds water, stays smooth, and looks sharp from the road.

Gravel-to-Asphalt Conversions

Tired of regrading caliche and chasing gravel out of the yard? Converting an existing gravel driveway is one of our most common Bastrop projects. If your gravel is well packed, it becomes part of the new base, which keeps costs down. Soft spots that pump mud after a rain get dug out and rebuilt first.

Full Driveway Replacement

When an old driveway is alligator-cracked, crumbling at the edges, or holding water, resurfacing just hides the problem. We remove the failed asphalt, repair the base, and repave so you start with a new 15-to-20-year driveway, not a cosmetic layer that cracks again by next summer.

Long Rural & Acreage Driveways

Ranch and acreage drives off FM 969, FM 20, FM 535, SH-21, and county roads can run hundreds of feet. We pave long drives efficiently with paving machines rather than hand crews, and we can phase the work, starting with the road apron and the area near the house, to fit your budget.

Driveway Aprons, Culverts & Road Tie-Ins

The apron where your drive meets the road takes the most abuse and is the first place water collects. We build aprons to tie cleanly into county roads, City of Bastrop streets, and state highways, and we install or replace culvert pipe where the ditch needs it. Before work starts, we help you confirm whether your connection needs a Bastrop County, City of Bastrop, or TxDOT permit.

Our Driveway Paving Process

1. Site Visit & Written Estimate

We walk the property, measure, check drainage and existing base, and talk through how you use the drive: daily commuters, work trucks, RVs, or trailers. You get a written, itemized estimate with base depth and asphalt thickness spelled out.

2. Excavation & Subgrade Prep

We remove old asphalt, grass, and soft soil, shape the grade so water runs off and away, and compact the subgrade. This step decides whether your driveway lasts.

3. Crushed Limestone Base

A layer of crushed limestone base goes down and is compacted in lifts. Sandy lots get extra width beyond the paved edge for support; clay lots get extra depth and drainage attention.

4. Hot-Mix Asphalt Paving

We lay hot-mix asphalt at the specified thickness, typically 2 to 3 inches compacted for residential drives, and roll it while it is at the right temperature so it reaches full density.

5. Edges, Cleanup & Care Guide

Edges are finished and backfilled, the site is cleaned up, and you get simple care instructions: when to drive on it, what to avoid during the first month, and when to schedule your first sealcoat.

What Affects the Cost of an Asphalt Driveway in Bastrop?

  • Size: total square footage, including turnarounds and parking pads.
  • Existing surface: a sound gravel base costs less to pave over than a tear-out.
  • Soil & drainage: soft sand, clay, or low spots may need extra base or regrading.
  • Thickness: heavier vehicles need a thicker base and surface.
  • Access & culverts: road tie-ins, culvert pipe, and permit requirements.

Every estimate is free and itemized, so you can see exactly where the money goes and compare quotes fairly.

Asphalt Driveway Paving FAQs

Can you pave over my existing gravel driveway?

Often, yes. If the gravel is well compacted and drains properly, we regrade it, add and compact fresh crushed limestone base where it is thin or soft, and pave over it. If the gravel has sunk into sand or clay and pumps mud after rain, we dig out the soft areas first so the asphalt is not sitting on a failing base.

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

Most residential driveways get 2 to 3 inches of compacted hot-mix asphalt over 4 to 8 inches of compacted crushed-stone base. If you park a work truck, RV, horse trailer, or have deliveries from heavy vehicles, we spec a thicker base and surface so the drive does not rut.

Will the sandy Lost Pines soil cause my driveway to fail?

Loose sand is a problem only when it is ignored. Unsupported asphalt edges crumble in sandy soil, so we compact the subgrade, extend the base beyond the paved edge, and taper or support the edges. Where clay is present we address drainage so water does not sit under the drive.

Can you pave a long rural or acreage driveway?

Yes. Long drives off FM 969, FM 20, SH-21, and county roads are common for us. If budget is a concern, many owners pave the apron and the first stretch from the road and the area near the house first, then finish the middle later.

Do you handle the driveway culvert and apron at the road?

We build the apron and can install or replace the culvert pipe where it is needed. We help you confirm whether your road connection needs a county, city, or TxDOT permit before work starts.
